Active - Vitamin C Derivative

Inhibits tyrosinase & TRP-2 to block melanogenesis. Stimulates collagen & hyaluronic acid synthesis. Scavenges reactive oxygen species after UV exposure.

Active - Neuropeptide

Synthetic hexapeptide that mimics the N-terminus of SNAP-25. Competes for SNARE complex assembly, reducing neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction. Result: relaxed facial muscles, reduced expression lines.

Amino Acid

Non-essential amino acid and component of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). Small molecular size allows easy penetration into the stratum corneum, where it contributes to moisture retention.

Active - Soothing

Stimulates cell proliferation in wound areas and has keratolytic properties that loosen the stratum corneum. Provides potent anti-irritant action that soothes post-exfoliation or sensitized skin.

Botanical Extract

Contains over 200 bioactive compounds including acemannan polysaccharides, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and salicylic acid. Acemannan stimulates macrophage activity and fibroblast growth. Polysaccharides form a moisture-retaining film on skin.

Active - Brightening

Alpha-glucoside of hydroquinone. Competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase — binds the active site without being oxidized. 10x safer than hydroquinone with no melanocyte cytotoxicity. Also inhibits TRP-1 and TRP-2 for dose-dependent melanin reduction.

Antiperspirant

Polymeric aluminum salt that plugs eccrine sweat gland ducts by forming a gel precipitate with mucopolysaccharides. Reduces sweat output by 20-50% and has mild antibacterial activity.

Solvent / Vehicle

Water serves as the universal solvent for all hydrophilic actives and sets the physical state of aqueous formulations. The quality and purity of water directly affects formulation stability and preservative efficacy.

pH Adjuster / Amino Acid

Semi-essential cationic amino acid. Precursor to nitric oxide via eNOS enzyme, leading to vasodilation and improved microcirculation. Also a precursor to proline, a key collagen building block.

Antioxidant / Vitamin C Booster

Organosilicon Vitamin C form with sustained antioxidant activity. The silanol group improves skin affinity and penetration compared to conventional ascorbic acid derivatives, providing a slower-release antioxidant effect.

Active - Natural Retinol Alternative

Meroterpene from Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi) seeds. Activates PPAR-gamma pathway — retinol-like activity without binding retinoid receptors. Upregulates collagen I, III, and IV genes. Inhibits MMP-1 and NF-kB for anti-inflammatory effect. Does not cause retinoid dermatitis.

Antioxidant Stabilizer

Hindered phenol antioxidant. Reacts with peroxyl and alkoxyl radicals via hydrogen-atom transfer. Prevents autoxidation of oils, retinol, and other oxidation-sensitive ingredients. Does not act directly on skin — it protects the formula.

UV Filter

Hydroxyphenyltriazine broad-spectrum UV filter absorbing both UVA and UVB (280-380nm). Photostable and unique in its ability to stabilize other filters including Avobenzone. Scavenges triplet-state excited molecules. Oil-soluble.

Active - Soothing

Monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol from Matricaria chamomilla (German chamomile). Inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase pathways for potent anti-inflammatory action. Also inhibits thromboxane synthetase.

Humectant

1,3-Butanediol acts as a lightweight humectant with penetration-enhancing properties. Disrupts lipid packing in the stratum corneum to improve delivery of active ingredients. Also serves as a solvent for hydrophilic actives.

Active - Vasoconstrictor

Methylxanthine alkaloid that inhibits phosphodiesterase, increasing cAMP and stimulating lipolysis. Constricts blood vessels to reduce dark circles and puffiness. Anti-inflammatory and amphiphilic for good skin penetration.

Emollient

Medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) from coconut or palm kernel oil with a C8:C10 fatty acid ratio providing lightweight, non-greasy emolliency. Serves as an excellent carrier oil for lipophilic actives including retinol, tocopherol, and bakuchiol.

Emulsifying / Consistency

Mixture of cetyl (C16) and stearyl (C18) fatty alcohols. Acts as o/w co-emulsifier, thickener, and emollient. Forms lamellar liquid crystal structures with ionic surfactants, creating a stable cream matrix with excellent barrier properties.

Marine Active

Red seaweed (carrageenan) extract rich in sulfated polysaccharides, particularly kappa-carrageenan. Forms a protective hydrogel film on skin. Mineral-rich (iodine, calcium, magnesium) and antioxidant via superoxide radical scavenging.

pH Adjuster

Alpha-hydroxy acid naturally found in citrus fruits. At low concentrations acts as a pH buffer and adjuster. At higher concentrations promotes corneocyte desquamation via chelation of calcium ions in desmosomes.

Surfactant

Amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil. Zwitterionic at skin pH, making it extremely mild. Acts as foam booster and viscosity builder when combined with anionic surfactants. Significantly reduces irritation potential of primary cleansing surfactants.

Surfactant

Non-ionic alkyl polyglucoside surfactant with a glucose headgroup and fatty alcohol (decanol) tail. Extremely mild — does not disrupt lipid bilayers at normal use levels. Excellent foaming and wetting properties.

UV Filter

Aminobenzoate-type UVA absorber with peak absorption at 354nm (deep UVA I region). Oil-soluble and photostable — does not degrade under UV exposure. Protects against UVA-induced photoaging and immunosuppression.

Emollient / Texture

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) linear silicone polymer. Forms a breathable film on the skin surface. Fills in fine lines optically. Provides a silky, smooth skin feel and is non-comedogenic despite mild occlusive properties. Water-resistant.

Preservative Booster

Glyceryl ether that disrupts the cell membrane surface tension of microorganisms, significantly boosting the activity of primary preservatives like Phenoxyethanol. Allows for lower total preservative loads.

UV Filter

Triazine-type UVB absorber with peak absorption at 314nm and an extremely high molar extinction coefficient for maximum SPF contribution per percentage used. Oil-soluble with excellent photostability. Works synergistically with UVA filters.

Active - Fermented Biotechnology

Fermented filtrate of Galactomyces yeast, similar to Saccharomyces. Contains a complex of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and organic acids. Inhibits melanin synthesis by suppressing tyrosinase. Stimulates epidermal turnover and ceramide production.

Humectant

Hygroscopic polyol that attracts water from both the dermis and atmosphere into the stratum corneum. At 2-5% concentration, strengthens the skin barrier by upregulating aquaporin-3 and filaggrin expression. A key component of the skin's natural moisturizing factor.

Emulsifier

Monoester of glycerin and stearic acid with an HLB of approximately 3.8. Self-emulsifying with co-emulsifiers. Forms stable o/w emulsions and also acts as a pearlizing agent and consistency factor in creams.

Amino Acid

The simplest amino acid (non-chiral). The major collagen component — every third residue in collagen is glycine (Gly-X-Y repeat). Component of glutathione, the body's primary antioxidant tripeptide. Part of the skin's NMF.

Thickener / Gel Former

Hydrates and swells in water to form a clear gel matrix. Non-ionic nature makes it compatible with anionic and cationic ingredients. Exhibits pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) flow behavior — thick at rest, flows easily on application.

Active - Antimicrobial

Essential oil containing over 30% terpinen-4-ol as the primary antimicrobial. Disrupts bacterial cell membranes and inhibits cellular respiration. Effective against P. acnes, S. aureus, and E. coli. Anti-inflammatory via inhibition of TNF-alpha and IL-1beta.

Solvent / Penetration Enhancer

1,3-propanediol derivative that enhances transdermal penetration by disrupting lipid packing in the stratum corneum. Allows water-soluble actives to penetrate more effectively into viable epidermis.

Active - Vitamin B3

Precursor to NAD+ and NADP+ coenzymes critical for cellular energy. Strengthens the ceramide barrier, inhibits melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes (brightening), and reduces sebaceous lipid production (pore refinement and anti-acne).

Active - Anti-Aging Peptide

Palmitoylated synthetic tetrapeptide (GQPR). Acts as an anti-inflammatory matrikine, suppressing IL-6 secretion after UV exposure. Reduces chronic low-grade skin inflammation (inflammaging). Part of the Matrixyl 3000 complex.

Active - Signal Peptide

Palmitoylated synthetic tripeptide (GHK). Acts as a matrikine — mimics collagen breakdown fragments to signal fibroblasts to produce new collagen. Stimulates synthesis of collagen I, III, IV and fibronectin. Part of the Matrixyl 3000 complex.

Active - Pro-Vitamin B5

Penetrates skin and converts to Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), which is essential for Coenzyme A synthesis. Stimulates fibroblast proliferation and accelerates re-epithelialization of skin. BASF pharmaceutical grade for maximum purity.

Humectant / Preservation Booster

1,2-Pentanediol acts as a humectant with intrinsic antimicrobial activity that supports preservation. Its low melting point and good solvency make it effective for dissolving active ingredients.

Preservative

Disrupts bacterial cell membranes with broad-spectrum efficacy effective up to pH 12. Compatible with anionic and non-ionic surfactants. Significantly enhanced by Ethylhexylglycerin as a co-preservative.

Solubilizer / Emulsifier

Non-ionic polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate with HLB of approximately 16.7. Solubilizes small amounts of lipophilic ingredients (fragrances, essential oils) in aqueous systems without forming a visible emulsion.

Solubilizer

Polypropylene glycol-polyethylene glycol block copolymer that acts as a non-micellar solubilizer. Enables incorporation of oil-soluble actives like fragrance compounds into water-based serums and mists while maintaining crystal clarity.

Amino Acid

Cyclic imino acid that is an essential collagen building block — proline and hydroxyproline make up approximately 20% of collagen's amino acid sequence. Promotes fibroblast collagen synthesis when applied topically.

Humectant / Solvent

1,2-Propanediol. Acts as both humectant and solvent with mild antimicrobial boosting properties. Enhances preservative efficacy and serves as an excellent solvent for organic UV filters. Lower skin irritation potential than ethanol.

Active - Retinoid

All-trans retinol binds RAR/RXR nuclear receptors and activates gene transcription for: increased collagen I/III/VII synthesis, inhibition of collagenase and stromelysin, normalized keratinocyte differentiation, increased epidermal thickness, and angiogenesis stimulation.

Acid - BHA Exfoliant

Lipophilic beta-hydroxy acid that uniquely penetrates sebum-filled pores. Dissolves the intercellular cement between corneocytes for exfoliation. Directly antimicrobial against P. acnes bacteria.

Amino Acid

Non-essential amino acid that is a key NMF component maintaining stratum corneum hydration. Precursor to ceramides via the sphingolipid biosynthesis pathway. Also a building block for proteins and phospholipids.

Texture Modifier / Absorbent

Amorphous silicon dioxide with a highly porous structure that absorbs sebum and surface oil on contact. Creates a matte finish by scattering light. Also improves texture by acting as a spreadability agent and reducing tackiness.

Viscosity Modifier

Ionic strength from NaCl affects polymer chain expansion and contraction. In hydroxyethylcellulose gels, small additions fine-tune the final viscosity for the desired texture.

Active - Hyaluronic Acid

Low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid sodium salt (50-100 kDa), small enough to penetrate the stratum corneum and reach viable epidermis. Binds up to 1000x its weight in water. Stimulates keratinocyte proliferation via CD44 receptor signaling.

Surfactant

N-lauroyl derivative of sarcosine (amino acid). Provides gentle cleansing with excellent foaming. Biodegradable and derived from natural amino acids. Compatible with all surfactant types, including amphoteric and non-ionic.

Humectant - NMF

Sodium salt of pyroglutamic acid (PCA). Major component of human NMF — comprises 12% of the free amino acid pool in stratum corneum. Highly hygroscopic, absorbing water from the atmosphere. Demonstrated superior humectancy compared to glycerin at equivalent concentrations.

Emollient - Biomimetic

Hydrogenated form of squalene (from sugarcane via Neossance). Biomimetic lipid identical to the squalene component of human sebum (approximately 12% of sebum composition). Non-comedogenic despite being an oil. Fills intercellular spaces in the stratum corneum.

Antioxidant

Alpha-tocopherol — the primary lipid-soluble chain-breaking antioxidant. Donates a hydrogen atom to lipid peroxyl radicals, terminating oxidative chain reactions. Regenerated by Vitamin C in the antioxidant network. Directly protects cell membrane phospholipids.

Chelating Agent

Aminopolycarboxylate chelator with high affinity for Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions. Prevents metal-catalyzed oxidation of Vitamin C and formula discoloration. Readily biodegradable, unlike conventional EDTA.

Thickener / Stabilizer

High-molecular-weight exopolysaccharide produced by Xanthomonas campestris fermentation. Exhibits pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) rheology — thick at rest, flows when applied. Forms synergistic hydrogen bonds with galactomannans for enhanced thickening.

Active - Sebum Control

Zinc salt of L-pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA). The zinc ion regulates 5-alpha-reductase, reducing DHT-mediated sebum overproduction. The PCA moiety is an NMF component providing concurrent hydration. Antimicrobial activity against P. acnes.
